These are the dolphins my son and I swam with on a truly memorable excursion in Kaikoura, New Zealand. The photo is a wonderful reminder of a long-held dream to visit New Zealand and travel around that lovely country. Swimming with dolphins is something I have wanted to do for years and it more than lived up to my expectations.
Sometimes it’s good to revisit the dreams and goals we set in the past and recognise that we can still achieve them. It’s important to SLOW DOWN, take time out, look at what you have already achieved and celebrate that. And if there’s something you haven’t yet achieved, then why not give it another go? Maybe NOW is the time and not before.
Let go of your fears and embrace your dreams – you never know what might happen if you do. These dolphins say dreams DO come true …

From Merav | AllWays Car Rental NZ:
Zoe, thank you for this post. I loved it not only because it is about an experience in NZ
but because it came just after I wrote about my 40th wish list. Getting closer to the date, and planning to mark the first tick in the wish-list, this post is just the additional inspiration I was looking for. Follow your dreams as they DO come true!
From Zoë Dawes:
Oh how lovely Merav – all the best for your dream decade!
From Melvin:
I also swam with dolphins in New Zealand… just a bit further south at Akaroa. It was amazing! I just think that tourism have to be careful as it seems that it could get a bit too big.
From Zoë Dawes:
So agree Mel. It was far more commercialised than I had expected and would not necessarily recommend doing it in this way. However, it WAS a dream made real and here’s hoping future ones come true too
From Jools Stone:
I don’t think I’ve ever done anything quite as exotic or exciting myself, but I do love the sentiment of this post Zoe. Now is always the time. I just made that up. Sounds like a slogan doesn’t it? lol
From Chloe Johnson:
Awww I have done this in NZ (my home) too when I was about 11 years old. But when I did it there was a pregnant woman swimming with us too, and the dolphins surrounded her. Apparently they could sense the newborn and were protecting her. Magical animals.
From Zoë Dawes:
Cheers Jools. Highly recommend pursuing dreams. As you so profoundly put it, Grasshopper; “Now is always the time …”
From Zoë Dawes:
What a delightful story Chloe. On the radio today it was saying how very intelligent dolphins are, and your story illustrates that beautifully. NZ is such a lovely place to live – lucky you
