Charlestown, Cornwall: Poldark puts it on the map

July 23, 2016 by Zoe Dawes 3 Comments
Winston Graham set his ‘Poldark’ series of historical novels in Cornwall, where he’d lived for over 40 years. In the recent TV adaptation of Poldark, the full glory of the dramatic coastline has entered all our homes. Ross Poldark (curly-locked Aiden Turner) and his lady-love Demelza (red-head Eleanor Tomlinson) spend a lot of...

May 18, 2016 by Zoe Dawes 3 Comments
The ‘Great Men’ of Casa degli Omenoni Tucked away in a little backstreet near Il Duomo, Milan’s famous Cathedral, is Clubino, an exclusive gentlemen’s club. Historically it is better known,  appropriately, as the Casa degli Omenoni – the House of the Great Men (rebuilt 1565-67). Adorning its facade are eight enormous...

The poignant story of Marienburg Castle, Germany

November 10, 2015 by Zoe Dawes 13 Comments
Walt Disney must have visited Marienburg Castle or seen it in his dreams. It’s the epitome of a fairytale palace, all pointy turrets and rounded towers, set high on a hill amidst forested countryside in the heart of Lower Saxony, not far from Hanover (Hannover). Its story is a fairytale romance,...

Shopping with a dash of history in charming Chester

November 1, 2015 by Zoe Dawes 5 Comments
On a shop-til-you-drop day out in Chester with a friend we combined an exploration of the streets, lanes and byways with an in-depth trawl through its department stores, boutiques and quirky independent shops. This Roman soldier seemed oblivious to the light rain dripping down his steel helmet as he chatted...

Ancient Petra: a city beyond compare in beautiful Jordan

October 11, 2015 by Zoe Dawes 15 Comments
The donkey snorted and stamped its hooves. A flag flapped and snapped in the brisk breeze. In the valley below a goat bleated and a large bird cried out as it wheeled away into the distance. Surrounded by craggy mountains, the late afternoon sun glimmered through the heat and the...

Big shout-out to Anne, Joanne and Service Team at Big shout-out to Anne, Joanne and Service Team at @pyeford (Morecambe) for bringing my car battery back to life! It’s very common problem at the moment. I called #FordAssist who sent #AA Jake who gave battery big charge so I could drive it to #Morecambe. They tested it and put it on boost charge for a while. I’d not been driving enough in #lockdown 🙄 so they suggested regular running engine on drive just to keep battery going. Very impressed with social-distancing & #covid19 protectionism the Showroom👍

Proud to be Ambassador for this Ford UK dealership 🤗 l love my Quirkymobile!

With new #Covid19 restrictions in place I’m very lucky having a plethora (love that word!!!) of lovely places to exercise locally. So important to get outdoors for mental and emotional #wellbeing as well as physical exercise 🥾❄️🤗

(The Quirkymobile is coping VERY well in this winter cold!)

The views across the Bay towards the Lake District fells is one of the best in the area. Just good to get out and leave behind all the miserable news; nature’s a great panacea!!
