Quirky Travel Photo: Venus and Cupid on Morecambe Bay

April 5, 2014 by Zoe Dawes 8 Comments
At the end of Morecambe Bay heading towards Carnforth there’s a delightful sculpture beside the promenade.  A sturdy, naked female seated on the grass appears to be swinging a small figure around in the air.  As you drive past you get an impression of exuberant playfulness but I bet you...

The Lone Dingo, Alice Springs – Quirky Travel Photo

March 21, 2014 by Zoe Dawes 1 Comment
“The Lone Dingo seems to symbolise what so many of us are seeking when we head outdoors.  Isolation, intimacy with the environment, a simple existence, a better understanding of ourselves, the motivation behind so many of life’s journeys.” This beautifully simple mural was painted onto the side of a building...

“Ode To Autumn” – in praise of a season of bountiful beauty

October 13, 2013 by Zoe Dawes 11 Comments
Autumn trees in the Lake District What’s your favourite season?  In Britain we still have quite clearly defined changes around the year, keeping us on our toes and providing endless conversation topics in lifts around the country. Winter gives us frosty mornings, skeletal trees and occasional snow falls carpeting the...

September 27, 2013 by Zoe Dawes 5 Comments
Today’s quirky travel photo is of Videy Island (Viðey) just a few minutes’ ferry ride from Europe’s most northerly capital city, Reykjavik. Celebrating India’s Independence Day

August 15, 2013 by Zoe Dawes 9 Comments
India’s Independence Day is a national holiday, commemorating the nation’s independence from British rule on 15 August 1947. India attained freedom following an independence movement noted for largely non-violent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress (INC) and most famously, Ghandi.  Independence coincided with the partition of India, in which the British Indian Empire was divided along religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan....

Grasmere and Lake District daffodils in spring

April 23, 2013 by Zoe Dawes 7 Comments
Daffodils in Dora’s Field One lovely spring day, I spent a magical time photographing Lake District daffodils, exploring an evocative old house that Wordsworth used to live in and discovering that sheep may safely graze in Dora’s Field. Spring is the perfect time of year to visit one of Britain’s favourite...

Tulip Fever at the Keukenhof Gardens

April 11, 2013 by Zoe Dawes 13 Comments
‘Is it not strange, this madness that has gripped us?’ asks Cornelius. ‘What madness?’ asks the painter. ‘Have you surrendered to the passion yet?’ The painter pauses. ‘It depends what passion you are talking about.’ ‘This speculation on tulip bulbs! Great fortunes have been made and lost. These new hybrids...
